Hidden video cameras found in apartment

baynews9.com

A couple of tenants said they recently discovered hidden video cameras inside their Hillsborough County apartment.

"We understand that we have camera everywhere. In the bathroom, in our room," said tenant Vanya Samokovareva. "They looks like smoke detectors."

Samokovareva, 22, and her roommate, Ralitsa Dzhambazova, 23, are from Bulgaria. The women said they came to Tampa in May through a work-travel program.

"This is terrible. I never expect that this thing can happen to me or my friend," said Dzhambazova. "We just came here to spend one summer in the United States, to work here."

The tenants said they've been renting the Westchase area apartment for about two months and found the hidden video cameras last weekend. Samokovareva said they taped a piece of paper to block the view of the camera in their bathroom, aimed right at the shower.

"The bathroom and your room, this is the private place and you make, in the bathroom you take a shower, you make everything," she said. "This is, I'm sure that if there is a camera, this is the idea to show us somewhere naked and to show what we make in the bathroom."

The tenants said they followed the cables from the hidden camera in their bedroom underneath the carpet to a locked up closet. They broke the lock off and said they found that all the cameras were feeding into a closed circuit TV box connected to a Wi-Fi router.

Lawsuit: Rental firm spies on users

wavy
PITTSBURGH (AP) - A major furniture rental chain has software on its computers that lets it track the keystrokes, screenshots and even webcam images of customers while they use the devices at home, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of a Wyoming couple who said they learned about the PC Rental Agent "device and/or software" inside the computer they rented last year when an Aaron's Inc. store manager in Casper came to their home on Dec. 22.

The manager tried to repossess the computer because he mistakenly believed the couple hadn't finished paying for it, the couple said. Brian Byrd, 26, said the manager showed him a picture of Byrd using the computer — taken by the computer's webcam. The image was shot with the help of spying software, which the lawsuit contends is made by North East, Pa.-based Designerware LLC and is installed on all Aaron's rental computers.

"It feels like we were pretty much invaded, like somebody else was in our house," Byrd told The Associated Press in an exclusive telephone interview, the day before the suit was filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Erie. "It's a weird feeling, I can't really describe it. I had to sit down for a minute after he showed me that picture."

Many Bosses Spying On Employees As New Security Tactic

miami.cbslocal.com

DAVIE (CBS4) – Some business owners in South Florida are going to new lengths to protect their assets: they are spying on their own employees.

Fort Lauderdale Police say it’s a good idea. Recently, a federal postal employee was busted for skimming cash from stamp sales while on the job. The woman allegedly voided the transaction after selling the stamps to customers, then pocketed the cash.

Don Flipse owns “Field of Flowers” in Davie. Surveillance cameras allow him to keep a close eye on what’s going on at his store. He pays close attention to the cash register area. “This is a good opportunity for me to see what’s going on in the entire store,” said Flipse. “Once the money changes hands, I would make sure that there was nothing odd going on, dropped bills or hands going in pockets or anything of that nature.”

Bird Bond: 'Nano Hummingbird' Drone Takes Spying to the Sky

newsfeed.time.com

This drone gives new meaning to "bird watching."

Tech company AeroVironment has announced that the unmanned, “hummingbird–like” aircraft it's been working on since 2006 has achieved its prescribed goals. The Nano Hummingbird, developed for DARPA, the Pentagon's research arm, has both whimsy and espionage potential. Flying via remote control at something like 11 miles per hour, the drone wouldn't be able to keep up with the living and breathing hummingbird. But then, real hummingbirds don't have cameras. A North Hills cardiologist has been sentenced to 45 days in Nassau County jail for spying on patients and employees with a hidden camera in the bathroom of his Manhasset office.

Vincent Pacienza was convicted last June of unlawful surveillance, a felony. Pacienza surrendered his medical license and will serve five years probation after he is released.

Prosecutors said the 54-year-old ex-doctor told female employees he would be installing an air purifier in the restroom but the device, which faced the toilet, contained a hidden wireless camera with a direct video feed to a monitor underneath Pacienza’s desk.

Is your web cam spying on you?

kwgn.com
DENVER - Web cameras make it easy to keep in touch with far away friends and family. If you have a web cam on your home computer, laptop or even your cell phone, a hacker can be lurking, just waiting for a chance to gain control.

Lawyer: Laptops took thousands of images

philly.com

The system that Lower Merion school officials used to track lost and stolen laptops wound up secretly capturing thousands of images, including photographs of students in their homes, Web sites they visited, and excerpts of their online chats, says a new motion filed in a suit against the district.

More than once, the motion asserts, the camera on Robbins' school-issued laptop took photos of Robbins as he slept in his bed. Each time, it fired the images off to network servers at the school district.

Back at district offices, the Robbins motion says, employees with access to the images marveled at the tracking software. It was like a window into "a little LMSD soap opera," a staffer is quoted as saying in an e-mail to Carol Cafiero, the administrator running the program.

"I know, I love it," she is quoted as having replied.

Student says school webcam spied on him at home

cnn.com

Pennsylvania parents are suing their son's school, alleging it watched him through his laptop's webcam while he was at home and unaware he was being observed.

Michael and Holly Robbins of Penn Valley are suing the Lower Merion School District, its board of directors and the superintendent. The parents allege the district unlawfully used its ability to access a webcam remotely on their son's district-issued laptop computer.

The lawsuit seeking class-action status was filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

The suit said that on November 11, an assistant principal at Harriton High School told the plaintiffs' son that he was caught engaging in "improper behavior" in his home and it was captured in an image via the webcam.
